Employment for petroleum engineers is expected to grow by 2 percent slower than the average for all occupations) from 2023 through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The need for engineers to support mining activities, specifically, will support some job growth. Some employment opportunities will increase due to a need to develop new extraction methods for getting more from existing resources as well as acquiring new resources. As always, oil prices and federal policy on domestic oil production will be major determining factors when it comes to employment conditions in the industry. The election of Donald Trump—who has been a strong supporter of domestic oil and gas exploration—to a second presidential term may spur increased domestic oil production.
