Employment of geological technicians (including petroleum technicians) is expected to grow by 4 percent from 2023 through 2033, a rate that is as fast as the average for all careers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. New cost-effective technology that permits new drilling and increases production will continue to be important in helping the profitability of the oil industry. Those who are skilled at using this technology will have the best job prospects.
Oil and gas will continue to be primary energy sources for many decades. Most job openings will be due to retirements and job transfer. Technicians with specialized training and knowledge of Geographical Information Systems software will have the best employment opportunities.
