Physician Assistants, Physician Associates

Outlook

Employment for physician assistants, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), is expected to increase by 28 percent (much faster than the average) from 2023 through 2033. In fact, the career of physician assistant ranks in the top 10 fastest-growing occupations in the U.S. through 2033. The health care industry is continuing to use more physician assistants to reduce costs. The aging population and corresponding demand for health care services also is fueling employment growth. Opportunities will be best in rural areas and inner city clinics—settings which often have trouble attracting the most qualified candidates.

The role of the PA in delivering health care has also expanded over the past decade. PAs have taken on new duties and responsibilities, and they now work in a variety of health care settings. The DOL reports that physician assistants should have good opportunities in hospitals, outpatient care centers, offices of physicians, and ambulatory health care services. States that offer PAs a wider scope of practice will also offer more employment opportunities.
