High School

Courses in computer science, mathematics, and electronics, as well as English and art are helpful for future prepress work.

Postsecondary Training

Postsecondary education is strongly encouraged for most prepress positions and a requirement for some jobs, including any managerial role. Community and junior colleges offer printing technology, graphic arts, desktop publishing, and related programs. Postsecondary programs in printing technology are also available. Apprenticeships may also be available.

Any programs or courses that give you exposure to the printing field will be an asset. Courses in printing are often available at vocational-technical institutes and through printing trade associations.

Certification

Some colleges and universities offer certificate programs in prepress operations, print production, and related fields. Programs typically last six months to a year and are available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. Contact schools in your area for information about available programs.
