Prepress Workers

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Aspiring prepress workers obtain experience by completing apprenticeships or postsecondary printing programs.

Prepress workers need to understand a wide range of sophisticated printing equipment. They must have a keen eye for detail to turn text and images into finished printed products. They should know how to work professionally with clients and operate efficiently as part of a printing team. Since most jobs have tight deadlines, they should also be able to perform well in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment. Physically, you should have good manual dexterity, good eyesight, and overall visual perception. Artistic skill is an advantage in nearly any prepress job. Computer skills are increasingly important as advanced technology now plays a key role in the printing industry.
