Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Designers

The Job

Before they begin designing the printed circuit board, designers first discuss the project specifications with their manager or the client. Then they build digital libraries that contain the components that are used to create a schematic diagram, which displays all the components and their connections. Libraries contain schematic symbols (for resistors, capacitors, inductors, connectors, and integrated circuits), simulation models, footprints for PCB layout, and step models for 3D-printed circuit board displays. The designer then uses computer-aided design software and the components in the library to create the schematic diagram. The diagram is reviewed by engineers (although the designer may have an engineering background at some employers and handle this task) and/or the project manager to ensure that it is correct. Circuit simulations are run to test the potential performance of the circuit. The designer makes any necessary revisions in consultation with their colleagues and the client to optimize PCB layouts for performance, reliability, and manufacturability. At some companies, the designer takes the design through the layout, prototyping, and manufacturing processes. At other employers, a layout engineer handles these tasks.

In addition to these duties, designers prepare detailed documentation for all PCB designs, conduct design reviews and provide feedback to improve the overall PCB design process, and train new designers on how to use design software.
