Purchasing agents do not typically belong to unions, but they often join professional associations such as the American Purchasing Society, Institute for Supply Management, and NIGP: The Institute for Public Procurement. These organizations provide career support, network opportunities, continuing education classes and seminars, publications, and other resources. According to its Web site, the National Retail Federation is the “world’s largest retail trade association, representing retailers from the United States and more than 45 countries.” Its Web site offers information on education and careers in retail.
