High School
Recommended classes include computer science, psychology, mathematics, science, business, philosophy, and social studies. You’ll also need top-notch communication skills, so be sure to take English, writing, and speech classes. Learning a foreign language will allow you to communicate with staff who do not speak English fluently.
Postsecondary Education
Remote work coordinators typically have a degree in the field in which they work. For example, a coordinator who works at an engineering firm will have a degree in an engineering specialty. A coordinator who works in a cybersecurity department of a corporation will have a degree in cybersecurity, information security, or information technology (IT). Some coordinators have bachelor’s degrees in project management and complete minors, certificates, or specializations in the area in which they work. Employers may prefer candidates who have master’s degrees in project management, business management, or a management specialty (such as engineering management or IT project management).
Certification
Many colleges and universities offer certificate programs in business management, project management, and related fields, as well as in specialty areas such as engineering, sales, or information technology. Certificate programs typically last six months to a year and are available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. Contact schools in your area for information about available programs.
Other Education or Training
Remote work coordinators can continue to develop their skills and expand their knowledge by taking part in continuing education opportunities that are offered by the Project Management Institute, International Association of Project Managers, and associations that represent workers in various specializations (e.g., engineering, healthcare, logistics). Continuing education opportunities are also provided by colleges and universities and for-profit, online learning programs.
