Remote Work Coordinators

The Job

Remote work coordinators have a wide range of responsibilities. Those who are developing a new remote work program collaborate with executives to establish rules, protocols, and best practices for workers in the program. They must answer many questions such as:

  • What type of workers will be able to work remotely?
  • What remote work and other technology will be used?
  • Who will be responsible for setting up the technology and providing tech support?
  • How will worker productivity be evaluated?
  • What security measures will be implemented to protect both workers and sensitive information?
  • How much will it cost to establish the program?

The remote work coordinator designs pilot programs for different departments to test and evaluate remote models, and they give presentations and otherwise interact with workers to explain new remote work programs and address employee concerns. The coordinator may also be tasked with identifying, onboarding, and training employees who are good candidates for remote work.

When managing an existing program, coordinators make sure that workers have everything that they need (e.g., technology, information, other resources) to complete their tasks. They resolve technical issues and periodically conduct technology reviews to ensure that workers have the best resources to do their jobs.

Coordinators design and implement asynchronous workflows that allow workers in various time zones to complete work independently without needing regular feedback from colleagues in other time zones. Coordinators also host online meetings, make assignments to workers, and oversee their work (including ensuring that project deadlines are met). They monitor employee engagement and productivity by tracking and analyzing remote work productivity metrics and tool usage. If productivity and/or engagement issues arise, coordinators meet with employees to address these issues.

Coordinators host in-person meetings and casual get-togethers to help develop their teams develop trust and connections, as well as celebrate small and big workplace successes. They also resolve conflicts between team members.
