Outlook

The employment outlook for Unity developers is strong because video games, VR and AR content, and other Unity-powered products are so popular. Sixty-five percent of American adults played video games in 2019, according to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). In 2019, Americans spent a $35.8 billion on video game content, up from $29.1 billion in 2017. Worldwide revenue for virtual reality content and hardware is expected to reach $67.4 billion by 2025, according to Piper Jaffray, a financial services company and investment bank.

Employment for software applications developers who work for software publishers is projected to increase by nearly 31 percent from 2018 to 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (USDL). This is much faster than the average for all careers. The USDL says that “prospects will be best for applicants with knowledge of the most up-to-date programming tools and for those who are proficient in one or more programming languages.” Additionally, the information technology staffing firm Robert Half Technology included the careers of web, software, mobile, and VR/AR/MR developers on its list of “In-Demand Technology Careers.”
