Earnings for biological scientists vary extensively based on the type and size of their employer, the individual's level of education and experience, and the area of biology in which the scientist specializes. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) reports that biologists earned the following median annual salaries in May 2023 by specialty: biochemistry and biophysics, $107,460; microbiology, $85,470; zoology and wildlife biology, $70,600; and soil and plant science, $68,240. The DOL reports that the median salary for biological scientists, not otherwise classified, was $91,100. Salaries for biologists ranged from less than $52,230 to $158,730 or more.

In general, the highest salaries were earned by biologists in scientific research and development services and pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing, while the lowest salaries were paid by colleges, universities, and professional schools.

Biologists are usually eligible for health and dental insurance, paid vacations and sick days, and retirement plans. Some employers may offer reimbursement for continuing education, seminars, and travel.
