Unions and Associations

There is no uniform requirement for membership in any union or association in order to serve as a court interpreter or translator. However, in certain circumstances or states where interpreters are considered court employees, they may be required to join a union as part of their employment with the state or court system.

Membership in certain national or state associations can be helpful. Such organizations offer guidance and training opportunities; keep members apprised of legislation, technology, and issues affecting the profession; and often serve as clearinghouses for jobs. The National Center for State Courts is a national nonprofit organization focusing on all aspects of the court system. It offers test preparation, career guidance and testing for court interpreters, and extensive resources for interpreters as well as those considering an interpreter or translator career. National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators is one of the leading professional organizations for court interpreters and translators. It offers training, conferences, and networking opportunities for its members.

Court interpreting and translation associations also exist at the state and local levels. Examples include the Arizona Court Interpreters Association, the Texas Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators, and the California Court Interpreters Association. There are also local and state organizations for general interpreters and translators.
