A skilled technician who has strong leadership skills can be promoted to the position of fleet maintenance supervisor, who oversees a group of technicians. The next advancement step would be to fleet maintenance manager, who designs and oversees their employer’s fleet maintenance program, schedules regular maintenance, explores technology upgrades and other improvements, and acquires new vehicles and equipment and sells older models in order to maintain peak fleet performance. A technician with entrepreneurial and business acumen may start his or her own fleet maintenance business. Some technicians become educators at technical schools, colleges and universities, or in other settings.
