Mathematicians

Mathematicians in nonacademic positions are not represented by unions, but they can obtain useful resources and professional support from the American Mathematical Society, Association for Women in Mathematics, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical Association of America, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Mathematics teachers are represented by the following unions: American Federation of Teachers (https://www.aft.org) and the National Education Association (https://www.nea.org). They can also join the American Association of University Professors (https://www.aaup.org). Its purpose is to "advance academic freedom and shared governance; to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education; to promote the economic security of faculty, academic professionals, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and all those engaged in teaching and research in higher education; to help the higher education community organize to make our goals a reality; and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good."
