High School

Useful high school courses include mathematics, science (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics), psychology, health, computer science (especially computer-aided design, data science, data analytics, and artificial intelligence), shop, English, speech, writing, and foreign language.

Postsecondary Education

Architects, engineers, and industrial designers have a wide range of educational backgrounds, but all space habitat designers need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in their respective fields.

The majority of architecture students pursue a bachelor’s degree in architecture, going from high school directly into a five-year program. Most schools of architecture offer degrees through either a five-year bachelor’s program or a three- or four-year master’s program. It is highly recommended that students attend a school that has been accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Boar. Aspiring engineers earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering or an engineering specialty (e.g., aerospace, electrical, chemical), but top employers often require engineers to have a master’s degree in engineering. Industrial designers typically have bachelor’s degrees in industrial design, architecture, or engineering. The Industrial Designers Society of America also offers a list of schools on its Web site, https://www.idsa.org/resources/design-school-directory.

Certification

Many colleges and universities offer certificate programs in architecture, engineering (including specialties), and industrial design. Some offer certificates in space science or other space-related fields. Programs typically last six months to a year and are available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. Other Education or Training

Workshops, seminars, online courses, and other continuing education opportunities are provided by the American Institute of Architects, Industrial Designers Association of America, and many engineering and aerospace associations.
