Civil Engineering Technicians

Earnings

Median annual earnings for civil engineering technicians (CETs) were $60,700 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. That same year, the highest paid 10 percent of civil engineering technicians earned more than $91,010, while the lowest paid 10 percent earned less than $39,120. Fifty percent of CETs earned between $47,920 and $76,570. Technicians working for local government agencies had mean annual earnings of $69,820 in May 2023. Those who were employed by architectural, engineering, and related services firms earned $64,340.

Naturally, higher paying jobs go to those with advanced education and experience. The incomes of many civil engineering technicians who operate their own construction, surveying, or equipment businesses are excellent. Some of these companies can earn millions of dollars each year.

Paid vacations, pension plans, and insurance are normal parts of the benefits paid to civil engineering technicians. Many companies pay a bonus if a job is completed ahead of schedule or if the job is completed for less than the estimated cost. These bonuses sometimes amount to more than the employee's regular annual salary.
