Civil Engineering Technicians

Work Environment

Technicians usually work 40 hours a week with extra pay for overtime. Working conditions vary from job to job. Technicians who enjoy being outdoors may choose a job in construction or surveying; those who prefer working indoors may work in a consulting engineer's office on computations, drafting, or design, or they may work in laboratories. In either case, the work done by civil engineering technicians is usually cleaner than the duties performed by most other construction trades workers.

Civil engineering technicians feel the pride that comes from being a member of a team that constructs major buildings, bridges, or dams. In a way, such projects become monuments to the efforts of each member of the team. And there is the accompanying satisfaction that the project has improved, if only in a modest way, the quality of life in a community.
