Civil Engineering Technicians

Outlook

Little or no change in employment is expected for civil engineering technicians from 2022 to 2032, according to the U.S. Department of Labor—with most new positions becoming available as a result of the need to replace those who retire or leave the field for other reasons. As in most industries, those with certification and the highest education have the best outlook. Technicians who are familiar with word processing and spreadsheet programs, geographic information systems and global positioning systems, and emerging technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence) will have improved job prospects.

Civil engineering professionals will be needed because there is an ongoing need to repair and upgrade our nation's aging infrastructure (e.g., roads, bridges, airports, dams). Additionally, the growing population is creating a need for modern and well-maintained water systems and waste treatment plants.

New opportunities have emerged for civil engineering technicians in the renewable energy industry, especially in the solar and wind sectors.

Fiscal challenges faced by the federal, state, and local governments can restrict funding for construction projects. When budgets are cut, there are fewer employment opportunities for technicians.
