Some CETs belong to the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers and other unions.

ABET accredits educational programs in engineering, engineering technology, and other fields. Prospective civil engineering technicians should earn their associate's degree from an ABET-certified program. The American Society for Engineering Education is a nonprofit agency that promotes activities that increase student enrollment in engineering and engineering technology educational programs. The American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians is a professional society created for and administered by engineering technicians and technologists in all disciplines. America's oldest engineering society, the American Society of Civil Engineers, represents more than 160,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide. The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) provides universally recognized certification for individuals in engineering, engineering technology, and related fields.
