Edupreneurs should have extensive experience in their respective field (teaching, counseling, administration, etc.). Some people do not have experience in education, but use their backgrounds in computer science or other fields to develop education-related products or services.
To be successful, edupreneurs need a combination of business and soft skills. In terms of business skills, they need to have a basic understanding of accounting, finance, and business management. They must know how to use business technology such as accounting and customer relationship management software, as well as have expertise in marketing and branding. Expertise in using social media to promote one’s products and service is also extremely important.
Edupreneurs must have superior communication and interpersonal skills because they regularly interact with other educators, staff, and, most importantly, potential or current customers. They need to know their product or service inside-out and be passionate about its benefits when touting it to potential customers. It can be difficult to become a successful edupreneur, so people who would like to enter this field must have grit and determination and not be afraid to fail or encounter roadblocks. Successful edupreneurs are those who learn from their mistakes and are willing to change course if they identify better approaches or even more promising products and services to try to bring to market. Other important traits include strong leadership, organizational, and time-management skills; a desire to help others; and a willingness to continue to learn throughout one’s career.
