Forge Shop Workers

Historically, forge shops were noisy, hot, dirty, and presented more hazards than most manufacturing plants. However, many shops have installed equipment that has minimized the discomfort and dangers associated with forging. Heat deflectors and ventilating fans reduce heat and smoke. Improved machinery and shop practices help cut down the noise and vibration from hammers. Workers are given safety training and use protective equipment such as face shields, earplugs and muffs, safety glasses, safety shoes, and helmets; and machines are equipped with safety guards. Cranes, remote control tongs, and conveyors are used to move very large objects, but workers may still have to lift and move heavy forgings and dies. This heavy work requires considerable stamina, endurance, and strength.
