Fuel Cell Engineers

Outlook

Employment of fuel cell engineers will grow as more businesses emerge that develop, manufacture, operate, and maintain fuel cells. There will also be opportunities for businesses that produce and deliver the hydrogen and other fuels that are used in fuel cells. The stationary power generation segment of the industry is expected to experience especially strong growth in the near future.

The outlook for mechanical engineers in general is very good, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Those who work in automotive manufacturing will be in high demand to help improve the performance and range of electric and hybrid cars. Faster than average employment growth is expected through 2033 for mechanical engineers who work for engineering services. Those with advanced degrees, prior work experience, and solid knowledge of the latest engineering software programs will have better job prospects.

Opportunities for fuel cell engineers will be good at major auto manufacturers, but industry experts believe that it will take at least five to 10 more years before fuel cells become mainstream in car production. The U.S. Department of Energy predicts that the growing incorporation of fuel cells in motor vehicles could create 675,000 new jobs by 2035.
