Building automation systems engineers are employed by companies that provide automation services and/or develop building automation technology, government agencies, large construction companies, and consulting firms that provide expertise to the aforementioned employers. Major private sector employers of building automation engineers include Honeywell International, Schneider Electric, Siemens AG, ABB, Johnson Controls, Delta Electronics, Eaton Corporation, Bosch Rexroth, Emerson Electric Co., and Signify NV. Some engineers operate their own consulting firms, while others teach building automation technology at colleges and universities.

Starting Out

People typically break into the field after first obtaining experience in lower-level building automation positions, although some positions are available for recent college graduates.
