Certification or Licensing

The Board of Certification of Medical Illustratorsoffers the certified medical illustrator credential. To be eligible, applicants must graduate from an accredited program that includes a course in human gross anatomy with hands on dissection, or have at least five years' experience and complete the aforementioned gross anatomy course. Applicants must also pass examinations in business practices, ethics, biomedical science, and drawing skills and undergo a rigorous review of their portfolio. No licensing is required for illustrators.
