Sales Engineers

Outlook

Employment for sales engineers is expected to grow by about 6 percent from 2023 through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This is faster than the average for all careers. The continual introduction of new technological products and improvements to previously existing products will require the skill and expertise of sales engineers to sell these products to customers. Strong job growth is predicted in the computer hardware and software areas, and job growth for sales engineers in computer systems design and related services will be much faster than average, at 15.4 percent through 2033. There will also be good job opportunities at independent sales agencies as manufacturers are increasingly outsourcing their sales staff as a way to curb costs. Sales engineers with solid knowledge of the technical products and services they are selling and strong interpersonal and persuasive abilities will do well in this field.

This is a competitive field with average employment growth expected for the next few years. Those with a bachelor's degree in engineering or other field related to the products and services they sell, along with strong sales skills, will have the best job prospects.
