Sales engineers work primarily indoors in offices but they may travel extensively to meet with customers, particularly if they are assigned multiple cities or large territories to cover. The work can be stressful since payment and bonuses are usually linked to the number of sales made during specified time frames. Most sales engineers work full-time hours and about a third work more than 40 hours per week. Their hours can be irregular at times, especially when working with customers who are overseas in different time zones.
