Dental Hygienists

Work Environment

Working conditions for dental hygienists are pleasant, with well-lighted, modern, and adequately equipped facilities. Hygienists usually sit while working. State and federal regulations require that hygienists wear masks, protective eyewear, and gloves. Most hygienists do not wear any jewelry. They are required by government infection control procedures to leave their work clothes at the office, so many dentists' offices now have laundry facilities to properly launder work clothes. They must also follow proper sterilization techniques on equipment and instruments to guard against passing infection or disease.

Many hygienists work part time. It is common practice among part-time and full time hygienists to work in more than one office because many dentists schedule a hygienist to come in only two or three days a week. Hygienists frequently piece together part-time positions at several dental offices and substitute for other hygienists who take days off. Many private offices are open on Saturdays. The work hours of government employees are regulated by the particular agency.
