Gastroenterologists

Outlook

Employment of all physicians is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The rising demand for specialty care (particularly by a growing aging population) coupled with a shortage of trained physicians has resulted in a good job market for those who choose to specialize. If the trend continues, the outlook for gastroenterologists and other medical specialists looks bright. Additionally, more than 50 percent of gastroenterologists were age 55 and older during the early 2020s, according to the American Medical Association, which suggests that there will be many new employment opportunities in the coming years as a large number of gastroenterologists reach retirement age.
