General Practitioners

Unions and Associations

Most general practitioners do not belong to unions, but some may be represented by the Doctors Council SEIU and the Union of American Physicians and Dentists. The American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, and American Osteopathic Association are the major professional associations for general practitioners. They provide publications, information on medical school and careers, networking opportunities, and other resources. Many general practitioners receive board certification from the American Board of Family Medicine. The Association of American Medical Colleges represents all accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools, major teaching hospitals and health systems, and academic and scientific societies. The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine supports accredited colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States.
