Medical Scribes

Unions and Associations

There are no specific unions for medical scribes. Individuals working in hospitals or medical centers may be subject to specific union membership requirements for that facility’s employees. Membership associations and organizations of and for medical scribes are in their early stages of development. The American College of Medical Scribe Specialists is a non-profit organization for medical scribes, representing the industry and offering advocacy and various certification levels for medical scribes. Similarly, the National Medical Scribe Association is a non-profit organization that focuses on developing standards for medical scribe certification, and provides information with respect to companies providing services, and referrals for those seeking jobs throughout the country.

The Medical Scribe Society is an organization dedicated to the standardization of scribe practice and partners with MedicalScribeInformation.com, which obtains and disseminates information with respect to scribe companies presence in states throughout the country.

The Joint Commission is not a membership organization for individuals, but rather the major health care accreditation organization in the U.S., responsible for accrediting hospitals and health care facilities. The Joint Commission sets standards for medical scribes employed by hospitals and health care facilities seeking accreditation.
