Ophthalmologists

Unions and Associations

About 32,000 ophthalmologists are members of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). The AAO's key activities include producing multimedia self-assessment materials for eye M.D.s and other health professionals; providing eye-care information to the public; advocating for eye M.D.s and patients before federal and state policy makers; and providing management and quality of care materials for AAO members to keep them up to date on developments in the field and to help them run their practices efficiently. The purpose of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) is to certify ophthalmologists in the United States. More than 30,000 ophthalmologists have been certified since the ABO was founded in 1916. Initial certification is good for 10 years. Thereafter, to remain certified ophthalmologists must complete further work and take a Web-based self-service test to assure that they have kept up with the latest information and skills in the field.
