CompTIA named cloud computing as the fourth-most, in-demand IT skill in 2024. "As remote work has increased, so has the demand for cloud computing," according to the tech association. "Cloud computing skills—such as configuration, deployment, security, management and troubleshooting—are essential for IT pros."

The recruiting firm Robert Half Technology (RHT) cited the career of cloud engineer as a “hot job” in its 2024 Salary Guide. It says that the need for engineers and workers in other hot IT careers will be strongest in the health care, education, financial services, manufacturing, and professional services sectors.

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment of computer network architects/engineers (a career that includes cloud engineers) is projected to grow 13 percent from 2023 to 2033. This is much faster than the average for all occupations.It says that demand for these professionals will be fueled by a greater focus on cloud computing, the acquisition and storage of Big Data, and the need for more information security professionals.

Cloud engineers with extensive experience and knowledge of Agile methodologies, artificial intelligence (including machine learning and generative AI), and the Internet of Things will have the best job prospects.
