Computer and Office Machine Service Technicians

Exploring This Job

A great way to learn more about this career is by watching a technician at work as he or she repairs computers and office equipment at your school or in your home. Learning the basics (e.g., toner replacement, fixing paper jams) of maintaining a copier or printer will also give you a good introduction to the field. You can also ask your school counselor to arrange a presentation or information interview with a technician. Suggested interview questions include: What made you want to enter this career? What type of tools and equipment do you use to do your work? What do you like most and least about your job? How did you train for this field? What advice would you give to young people about preparing for the field and being successful on the job? How will advances in technology change the field?

Participate in competitions that are offered by SkillsUSA (https://www.skillsusa.org) and other organizations to build your skills, compete for scholarships and cash prizes, meet people with shared interests, and have fun.
