Employment for all surgeons is expected to increase by 4 percent from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Opportunities for cosmetic surgeons should be better for several reasons. This is a highly specialized medical specialty, and the number of cosmetic surgeons is small as compared to the total number of surgeons. Additionally, cosmetic surgeons, who treat conditions associated with aging and help older people maintain a youthful appearance, can be counted among medical specialists who will be in strong demand by the aging baby boomer population. Finally, there is strong overall demand for plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures. According to statistics compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the market for these surgeons is large. In 2023, there were a total of 1.58 million cosmetic procedures, up 5 percent from 2022. The number of cosmetic minimally invasive procedures was 25.44 million in 2023, up 7 percent from 2022.
