The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the median annual salary for geoscientists was $91,130 in May 2018; the top paid 10 percent earned more than $187,990, while the lowest paid 10 percent earned less than $49,430 a year. At state government agencies, the average salary for geoscientists was $76,670.
Earth science professors earned a median annual salary of $90,860 in May 2018, according to the DOL.
Although the petroleum, mineral, and mining industries offer higher salaries, competition for these jobs is stiff and there is less job security than in other areas. In addition, college and university teachers can earn additional income through research, writing, and consulting. Salaries for foreign assignments may be significantly higher than those in the United States.
Benefits for full-time workers include vacation and sick time, health, and sometimes dental, insurance, and pension or 401(k) plans. Self-employed geologists must provide their own benefits.
