Scrum masters work for software development companies that use Scrum and other Agile frameworks and firms that provide Scrum-focused consulting and coaching services. Many other companies outside the tech industry now employ Scrum masters. Examples include JP Morgan Chase Bank, Capital One, Kraft Heinz Company, Northern Trust, Deloitte, Hitachi Solutions, Goldman Sachs, and United Airlines. Scrum masters also work for government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
Starting Out
Many people break into the field after first working as project managers (PMs), although PMs who do not have extensive experience with Scrum must take classes on the topic and earn certification credentials to augment their knowledge and demonstrate that they are qualified to work in this career. Others work as members of Scrum teams and are promoted after they demonstrate their knowledge and abilities.
Current Scrum masters can learn about job openings via internal company job postings, or through word-of-mouth at networking events. Other job-search strategies include using the services of a recruiting firm; attending career fairs; checking out job listings at LinkedIn.com, Indeed.com, and other general job-search sites; and visiting the Web sites of companies that employ Scrum masters to learn about and apply for an open position.
