The National Security Agency reports salaries for cryptanalysts are based on experience and degree. Technicians in the armed forces will find their salaries determined by their rank or grade level. Most new enlistees in military service will start at the basic E-1 rank—about $24,206 in 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Enlisted cryptographic technicians in the armed forces may eventually rise to the E-9 rank ($78,178), with higher pay. Armed forces personnel, it should be noted, generally do not have to pay for their housing or their food. Technicians who work for local and state government agencies will also find their salaries determined by government rules, and their salaries will vary from town to town and from state to state.

Government employees at all levels generally receive generous benefits, including health and life insurance, pension plans, and vacation, sick, and holiday pay.
