Dermatologists

Earnings

Earnings for dermatologists are affected by number of years in practice, geographic region, hours worked, and the skill, personality, and professional standing of the doctor. According to the Medscape Dermatologist Compensation Report 2024, the mean annual salary of dermatologists was $479,000.

Dermatologists who worked in physician offices earned average salaries of $347,530 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Those who worked in outpatient care centers earned $460,470.

The lowest-paid 10 percent of dermatologists earned less than $103,000 in May 2023, according to the DOL.

Dermatologists in private practice or group partnerships have the potential for higher earnings, but they must cover all of their own business expenses and benefits. For those hired by health care organizations, in addition to salary, dermatologists may receive benefits, including health and life insurance, malpractice liability insurance, paid vacation, and retirement plans. Some earn productivity bonuses as well.
