Dermatologists

Work Environment

Dermatologists are often solo practitioners. They work in well-lighted, air-conditioned offices, and they are usually assisted by clerical and nursing staff. A certain number of hours are spent each week visiting patients at the hospital. Most dermatologists also spend some time in laboratory settings, either on their own or in a hospital. Most specialists, including dermatologists, work in large urban areas.

Work hours are usually regular, since dermatologists see patients by appointment in their offices. They schedule surgeries and follow-up visits both at their offices and at hospitals. Dermatologists occasionally may have to answer emergency calls, such as to treat burn victims.

Fifty-three percent of dermatologists surveyed for the Medscape Dermatologist Compensation Report 2023 reported spending 30–40 hours per week seeing patients. Dermatologists often try to accommodate the working schedules of their patients by opening their offices on Saturdays or one evening a week. They spent additional 11 hours a week completing paperwork and administrative duties.
