Volunteer work at a hospital, community health center, or even the local Red Cross chapter can provide valuable experience. Some high schools offer membership in Future Nurses organizations.

Consider joining HOSA-Future Health Professionals, a national membership organization for high school and college students who are interested in pursuing careers in health care. HOSA offers competitions for aspiring medical professionals, including Anatomy and Physiology, CPR/First aid, Math for Health Professionals, and Medical Terminology competitions. Participate in camps and other summer exploration opportunities that are offered by colleges and universities and the National AHEC Organization. which seeks to “enhance access to quality health care, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of health-care professionals through community/academic educational partnerships.” (AHEC stands for “Area Health Education Centers.”) AHEC offers a variety of programs for students, including summer health-care exploration camps and career presentations.
