Employment for LPNs is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Due to advanced medical technology, people are living longer, though many will require medical assistance. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that in 2009, the senior population (those 65 and over) was approximately 39.6 million. This figure is expected to rise steadily and the number of seniors living in 2030 will be approximately 72.7 million. As this trend unfolds, more LPNs will be needed to care for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Employment for LPNs who provide services for the elderly and persons with disabilities is expected to increase by 26.7 percent from 2023 through 2033, which is much faster than the average for all careers. Private medical practices and outpatient centers will also be excellent job sources because many medical procedures are now being performed on an outpatient basis. There will be many jobs in rural areas, where there is a shortage of LPNs and other health care professionals.
