Molecular biologists employed in February 2020 earned a median salary of $60,563, according to PayScale.com. Salaries ranged from $40,000 to $99,000 or more. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) reports that microbiologists earned a median annual salary of $71,650 in May 2018. The DOL reports that the median salary for biological scientists, not otherwise classified, was $79,590. Salaries ranged from less than $45,030 to $126,390 or more.

Earnings for biological scientists vary based on the type and size of their employer, the individual's level of education and experience, and the area of biology in which the scientist specializes. In general, the highest salaries were earned by biologists in business and industry, followed by those self-employed, working for nonprofit organizations, in military service, and working for the U.S. Public Health Service or other positions in the federal government. The lowest salaries were earned by teachers and by those working for various state and local governments.

Molecular and cellular biologists are usually eligible for health and dental insurance, paid vacations and sick days, and retirement plans. Some employers may offer reimbursement for continuing education, seminars, and travel.
