Pediatricians

Earnings

Physicians who were still in their residencies earned an average of between $56,126 to $77,642 in the 2018–2019 academic year, according to a survey by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Pediatricians, while at the low end of the earning scale for specialty physicians, still have among the highest earnings of any occupation in the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the May 2018 median annual income for pediatricians was $183,240. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $68,860. Experienced pediatricians in large urban areas can earn more than $200,000 annually.

The earnings of pediatricians are partly dependent upon the types of practices they choose. Those who are self-employed tend to earn more than those who are salaried. Geographic region, hours worked, number of years in practice, professional reputation, and personality are other factors that can impact a pediatrician's income.

Benefits for pediatricians depend on the employer; however, they usually include such items as health insurance, retirement or 401(k) plans, and paid vacation days. Self-employed pediatricians must provide their own benefits.
