Quantum Computing Specialists

History

The theories that form the framework of quantum computing have been researched and discussed among computer professionals ever since at least the 1970s, according to the tech giant IBM. In the early 1980s, Dr. Paul Benioff, a physicist at Argonne National Laboratory, conducted research and published a series of papers that demonstrated for the first time that a quantum computer was theoretically possible. Dr. Benioff’s groundbreaking work prompted extensive research in quantum computing. According to IBM, major quantum computing milestones include the completion of experiments that proved a fully functional quantum computer could crack RSA encryption, which was not possible by a regular computer (1994); the development of a quantum algorithm that would allow people to swiftly search unstructured databases (1996), the first experimental demonstration of a quantum algorithm (1998), the development of the “transmon qubit,” which became a key component of many companies’ efforts to develop quantum computers (2007); the first company (IBM) to launch a cloud quantum computing service that included quantum computers (2016); and the launch of IBM’s Osprey, the world’s largest quantum computer (2022).

“While the theoretical implications are truly groundbreaking, the true impact of quantum computing lies within its ability to solve real-world problems,” according to Resources for Quantum Computing Professionals, a webpage from the IEEE Computer Society. The webpage goes onto say that “from cryptography to optimization and supply chain management, AI, financial modeling, and healthcare, quantum computing is poised to revolutionize diverse domains, providing innovative solutions to some of the most complex challenges we face today.”
