The IEEE Computer Society says that “quantum computing leverages quantum mechanics, utilizing qubits instead of the classical bits that traditional computers use. As opposed to the binary formatting of classical bits (0 or 1), qubits can exist in multiple states simultaneously— a groundbreaking discovery known as superposition. This unique power enables quantum computers to execute complex calculations at a significantly accelerated pace compared to traditional computers.”

A wide range of professionals work in quantum computing, and the number of occupational specialties is expected to increase as the field matures and include the following popular career paths:

  • Quantum engineers and scientists design, build, and maintain hardware and control interfaces that are used in quantum computing.
  • Quantum software developers and architects design and create software programs that are used to operate quantum computers and run quantum software programs.
  • Quantum algorithm researchers conduct research on how to use quantum computing techniques to resolve complex problems.
  • Quantum application specialists use their multidisciplinary knowledge of physics, engineering, computer science, quantum computing, and other fields to identify practical uses for quantum hardware and software in various industries.

Other quantum specialists focus on business development, sales, marketing, cybersecurity, ethics, testing and error correction, compliance, an other areas.
