Social Media Workers

Work Environment

Most social media professionals work a regular 40-hour week, though total hours may vary depending on the size of the company, the size of their social media staff, and the number and type of projects. Since the Internet is a 24/7 venue, social media workers should expect to work evenings and weekends.

Social media professionals work in comfortable, well-lit offices. A powerful server and the fastest Internet connection are work environment must-haves for this job.

The job can often get frustrating, especially when dealing with hackers (unauthorized intruders to a computer or Internet system), angry customers, and Web trolls (individuals who post offensive or controversial comments in an online forum, chat room, blog, or other setting in order to provoke outrage or otherwise disrupt legitimate conversation). Successful social media professionals are able to multitask; for example, many are able to write Web site entries while interacting with Web forum users. Since new digital tools are produced at a quick rate, social media professionals must spend time familiarizing themselves with the latest widgets, tools, and programs in order to stay technically savvy.
