Unions and Associations

Most surgeons do not belong to unions, but some may be represented by the Doctors Council SEIU and the Union of American Physicians and Dentists. The American Medical Association and American Osteopathic Association are the major professional associations for physicians and surgeons. They provide publications, information on medical school and careers, networking opportunities, and other resources. Other membership organizations for surgeons include the Association of Women Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Many surgeons receive board certification from the American Board of Surgery, American Board of Medical Specialties, American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, and the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

The Association of American Medical Colleges represents all accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools, major teaching hospitals and health systems, and academic and scientific societies. The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine is an organization of osteopathic medical schools.
