Work Environment

Surgeons work in sterile operating rooms that are well equipped, well lighted, and well ventilated. They meet patients and conduct all regular business in clean, brightly lit offices. There are usually nurses, laboratory technicians, medical assistants, administrative assistants, bookkeepers, and receptionists available to assist surgeons.

Surgeons usually see patients by appointments that are scheduled according to individual requirements. They may reserve all mornings for hospital visits and minor surgery. They may see patients in the office only on certain days of the week. Surgeons may also visit patients in nursing homes, hospices, and home-care settings. Many surgeons work 60 or more hours a week.
