Clinical Nurse Specialists

Outlook

Employment of registered nurses (a category that includes CNSs) is expected to grow percent (or faster than the average for all careers) from 2022 to 2032, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Growth will occur because of an increase in the demand for health care services. Several factors—including health care legislation and the resulting newly insured, an increased emphasis on preventative care, and the large, aging baby-boom population—will contribute to this demand. Additionally, many new openings for CNSs will emerge as a result of an expected wave of retirements. Nearly 30 percent of CNSs who were surveyed by the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists in 2022 said that they planned to retire within the next five years. Clinical nurse specialists with the proper credentials and certification should have no trouble finding posts in a wide variety of health care facilities.
