Clinical Nurse Specialists

Work Environment

Clinical nurse specialists work primarily in hospitals, clinics, or nursing homes but may work out of their own homes and other community-based settings, including industry, home health care, and health maintenance organizations.

The work environment for CNSs varies by their employment setting. For example, clinical nurse specialists who work directly with patients may occasionally encounter stressful and mentally taxing situations as they treat patients with life-threatening diseases. The work atmosphere for those who work in academic or consulting roles is more relaxed. College professors typically work nine months a year, with summers off.

Many clinical nurse specialists enjoy their work. Seventy-eight percent of CNSs who were surveyed by PayScale.com in 2024 said that they were "highly satisfied" with their careers.
